The result is rather interesting because it creates a constant variation between different situations, with a base focused on exploration and dialogues and the frequent takeover of mini-games to provide sudden blows of extremely elementary but also decidedly hilarious action, above all thanks to the demented characterization adopted for represent the different situations in which we have to act. The game was released last summer, but we recover it now, with this review, because it can be particularly suitable for Halloween , especially for those who are inclined to a decidedly humorous interpretation.

Well, it’s not. What I absolutely didn’t expect, though, was that, after a short introduction on the couch (in a similar fashion to the demo), it would turn out to be a narratively focused comedy experience with the 60-ish replayable microgames just sort of sprinkled in, but I’m happy it did. Right off the bat you need to understand – if the humerus style of the game doesn’t strike your funny bone, you will not enjoy SPOOKWARE. But, if you have a heart and enjoy the sillier side of things, you’ll no doubt get a kick out of it. In fact, I feel Sans would fit in rather well with the protagonists, Lefti, Midi, and Righti. Covering the paradigms of shy intellectual, artiste, and raddest freakin’ dude ever, these three brothers decide to get some (after)life experiences and venture out into the world after realising they’ve spent way too long on the couch devouring horror movies. It’s kind of strange that a Halloween-themed collection of minigames managed to come out a couple of weeks before the upcoming WarioWare title. Or even that it came out a couple months before my favorite spooky holiday. Nevertheless, that’s exactly what happened with SPOOKWARE, which was released on August 26th. Or, to be more accurate, SPOOKWARE Episode 1 launched on that date. It’s one of 4 planned episodes, and quite entertaining in its own right. Generic names aside, they’re very silly and enjoyable characters, and they add lots of heart to a strange adventure. Mix in a bit of horror and the unknown, and you have a great mix for any gamer. The game starts strong right away, offering a tight series of 9 mini-games to be completed in sequence before even being able to see the beginning of the story, just to make it clear what we have to deal with during the adventure. Three somewhat funny-looking skeletons watch the action on an antediluvian TV comfortably seated on a sofa, which suggests that the theme of the game is actually a sort of marathon of “classic horror films” that the three brothers are pursuing for who knows how long now, in a typical basement of an American house.

I should note, when I took SPOOKWARE on for review, I didn’t realize it was an episodic format. That said, there’s a lot of content to be found in SPOOKWARE Episode 1. It features some 60+ mini-games and is split into 4 chapters (one of which is the prologue). Each chapter has a different focus, from solving a murder in one to creating a school band in another, culminating in running a restaurant. Those activities may sound mundane, but the way the game is written, there’s nary a moment that’s remotely boring. There’s a thread of absurdity woven throughout the episode, and it alternates between humor and horror regularly.

Mostly this means simply wandering around exploring – chatting to everyone you can find and picking up every item possible, usually to exchange for something you actually need later. It’s very ‘on rails’ in the sense that everybody’s playthrough will go pretty much exactly the same way. Even if you’re running through there’s not much you’re likely to miss as each location is limited in scale and requires the player to travel back and forth through them to progress. This is what I mean when I say you have to enjoy the writing. If the shenanigans of the Milk Gang, the thief that somehow manages to fit an entire vending machine through his cabin door.
