STAR OCEAN First Departure R Switch NSP Free Download Romslab This very first game in the Star Ocean series – a series which eventually grew to include eight titles of varying quality – has been through a handful of iterations over the years. Originally released exclusively in Japan on Super Famicom back in 1996 it was then extensively remade using the Star Ocean 2 engine for PSP in 2007, adding brand new prerendered backdrops, voice acting, 3D battlefields, a world map and beautiful CGI cutscenes courtesy of Production I.G. This updated and enhanced version of the game now finds its way onto PS4 and Nintendo Switch in the form of Star Ocean: First Departure R and what we’ve got here is essentially the same game released on PSP with high definition visuals. Some newly drawn character avatars and a handful of combat tweaks to make things a little more challenging. This is still a pretty fun little RPG to play. It runs about twenty hours so doesn’t outstay its welcome and many of its systems – real time battles on 3D battlefields and extremely deep crafting – are still quite impressive to this day. However, it’s also very much a product of its time, nowhere near as complex or gripping as the second game in the series, and it tends to waste a lot of time with endless backtracking and random enemy encounters that make the whole thing a little bit of a chore to grind your way through.
The story opens and more characters are introduced.
Three other characters join Roddick in his adventure automatically, and with only eight total spots on the roster and nine additional characters that can be recruited, it’s going to take more than one playthrough to see all the characters’ stories. The four additional characters that join offer little to the main story, whereas Roddick will routinely talk with Millie, Ronyx, and Ilia in additional story scenes. While not all the side characters get a detailed story, the ones present are decent. There is also a lack of a true arch nemesis in Star Ocean, though the game presents a well-placed faux ending before revealing the culminating area and giving a small introduction to the final villain. The Private Action option allows the party to wander the town and, if certain conditions are met, skits will occur with Roddick and certain characters. Most of the time a character’s backstory will get fleshed out, but items, or skill books can be acquired as well. Depending on the Private Actions taken, among other factors, players can expect to see small changes to the ending scenes. There is a point system with each character, and Private Actions can raise or lower this hidden attribute, which has a lasting effect. The action combat system breaks characters into two groups: physical fighters and mages. Players directly control one character, while orders determine how the AI-controlled characters act in battles.
Crafting and skill systems still pretty deep
Usually the AI rushes into the thick of battles, often getting pincered and beat down if the enemies are decently leveled. The mages hardly move, and cast spells at a slow rate. Millie, the default healer of the game has offensive spells, but never used them in battles, though she did a fine job of keeping her allies healed. A big annoyance in battles is getting struck by a status ailment such as Paralysis or Petrify. A healer can cure the player character of these statuses, but if they are not available, the player needs to switch to a free party member and use an item to remedy the affliction. Star Ocean uses a real-time battle system, where your party faces off against enemies in a combat arena, triggered by a traditional random encounter system. Darkestville Castle Switch NSP

You can take on foes using a standard attack or a pair of special Techniques tied to the shoulder buttons. Sadly, the combat in First Departure nearly inevitably turns into nothing but Technique spamming, eventually. Techniques not only deal the most damage, but can often stunlock enemies in place, diminishing their threat. Using the same Techniques over and over is easily the most effective and most efficient way to take out enemies, and there’s really no reason to not use them. Replenishing the spent MP is also trivial. It’s effective, but not terribly interesting – just click L1 a bunch during combat and your character will automatically line up and attack with the Technique.
You often don’t even have to move your character yourself as they can line up the attack for you.
The combat design in place simply gears itself towards this mundane strategy. If there were higher difficulty levels available, it’s possible such a spamming strategy wouldn’t work, but First Departure doesn’t have anything above standard (unlike its followup, Star Ocean: Second Evolution). It makes participating in combat a bit of a drag. In the pre-release marketing for this game, Square Enix boasted that it had ‘Adjusted Game Balance’, stating specifically to expect ‘more challenge in combat’. It’s been several years since I played the PSP version so I can’t specifically identify how things might have been tweaked, but it largely doesn’t feel too different from what I remember.

If I had to guess, perhaps the enemies around the half-way point in the game (after Eckdart) have been given a buff to their stats. The earlier Star Ocean game do have a couple of unique elements to them that I am genuinely appreciative of. Four slots of your total party roster can be filled with eight different units depending on choices made in the game, and some of the choices vary up the story progression slightly. It’s not quite like having completely diverging story paths, but considering the game’s relatively short run time compared to other JRPGs (about 20 hours for the storyline), it’s a nice way to add some replayability for those revisiting the game.
