Before you begin to tackle the titular list you need to work your way up through racing tiers one and two, broken down into several short series of five events. Every drag race sees your car components take a beating, to the extent that your car overall rating and hence performance will be affected. You can go into the garage and upgrade your vehicle with parts from the scrapyard to begin with and eventually from level fifteen onwards in the store.

As we were finishing off our review we won one parts event for a fuel tank which was immediately succeeded by a better part from the junkyard. It makes for an occasionally frustrating path, but to be honest, once you get high enough rated parts your junkyard searches will be more focussed. First up, and we’ll get right on down with the story, such as it is. ‘The List’ refers to the top 10 drag racers on the mean streets of Oklahoma City. These grown men identify so closely with their cars that some of them share the names of the vehicles; Murder Nova and Farmtruck to name but two. Others have even more imaginative names, like Big Chief and Daddy Dave.

If you’re not on the “list,” you’re nobody. The “list” is made up of the 10 fastest street race cars in Oklahoma City, the best of the best.

These larger than life characters are in the game, and we start out as a nobody, before Farmtruck and AZN (pronounced “Asian”) take us under their collective wings and introduce us to the world of The List. The game is split into seasons and episodes, with each of the latter further cut up into five races, before we head off to the climax of each episode – the race against someone higher up the pecking order than us. Drag racing is split into definite stages, each race starting with a coin toss, where you can choose whether you want to run in the left or the right lane. There doesn’t seem to be any advantage to any particular lane though, so whichever you choose is fine. Ulrich Steppberger says: Street Outlaws is at least better than Super Street , but not by much. Technically, it’s also a meager fare, which is especially noticeable during the driving tests. The drag duels quickly become monotonous, and it’s annoying that the fussy cars easily spin out, which usually can’t be corrected and results in defeat.

Those who love the TV original might not mind that much, but The List is n’t really worth playing. It is all about one car driving against each other on a quarter mile straight line. No turns, no brakes, no aerodynamic skills. Whereas NASCAR is all about going forward and occasionally turning left, drag racing requires only half of that effort. Somehow, that concept was considered fun enough to be full-fledged game, and to make matters worse, that original concept was successful enough to warrant a sequel. I would like to know how and why. I played it and the damn thing bored me beyond repair.

A series of small interactive steps followed by ten to twelve seconds of actual drag racing. First of all, you’re supposed to burn out your tires, reducing their size and drag coefficient. According to the game, it helps out with your acceleration and top speed. Next, you have to hold down the R2 button until your car magically stops in front of the starting line. It’s impossible to make a mistake in here, as the car will automatically brake whenever it’s supposed to.
