It’s quite a different setting, one where the protagonist is a mage with their own giant robot and a rather obnoxious parrot buddy. At least they appear to be the game’s protagonist at first; the real hero of the game ends up being Wataru, a young boy who’s whisked away to this fantasy world, just like in the anime he originally comes from. Each of the Super Robot Wars games adapt several licensed anime series and the big debut this time is Mashin Hero Wataru. As a comedic series for kids, it seems to be an odd pick at first. The heroic protagonist encounters goofy villains, journeys with animal companions and collects magical items, with a quest that has more in common with JRPGs like Dragon Quest than your average mech anime. Then again, the squat little robots fit well.

While the Super Robot Wars usually have to mess with the proportions to fit the games’ “super-deformed” style, the robots from Wataru look identical to the anime. Wataru gets most of the focus in the game’s story, with his upbeat attitude infecting some of the more dour series featured like Code Geass and Cross Ange. A grizzled former princess who picks fights with everyone makes for an odd match with Wataru, but with its use of magic and dragon foes, Cross Ange actually fits quite well. It helps that Super Robot Wars X glosses over some of the creepier parts of the series, aside from its creepy sex pest of a villain, who the game’s female cast all take turns dunking on. However, aside from Wataru and Cross Ange, the other series don’t really mesh together. There are a number of new entries in Super Robot Wars X and I can’t help but question why they had to make their debut here. It’s great to see Gundam: Reconguista in G, with its many wonderfully strange mechanical designs (who wouldn’t want to pilot a giant floating pyramid?). However, due to the game’s format, which skips over large chunks of the shows it adapts, the plot here comes off as even more convoluted than the rushed anime series. A conflict about a colony wishing to reunite with the Earth doesn’t really work when the characters are all teleported to a different planet, anyway. Similarly, Buddy Complex, a largely forgotten Sunrise joint from the mid 2010s, also fits in awkwardly with the plot, which requires a whole lot of wormholes and time loops to work.

With most of the cast being teleported to this alternate world after their shows have already wrapped up. As a result, the game either skips over iconic moments or forces the characters to bring the same conflicts with them even when it doesn’t make sense. Even a show like Aura Battler Dunbine, which was already about characters being transported to another world to duke it out in giant robots, ends up taking place after the series, with the cast being warped to yet another different fantasy world. While games like Super Robot Wars T had fun with giving the cast a shared history within the same setting, there’s not much like that here. Even if some of the series don’t get much attention in the overarching story, they do at least come with their own theme songs. Super Robot Wars X contains some nice arrangements of songs from the anime featured, often with the vocals replaced by a gloriously cheesy saxophone. The original tracks are great, too. I especially liked the battle theme for the female protagonist, Amari, which sounds like something from a magical girl anime and somehow fits the action perfectly. Super Robot Wars is a classic series of turn-based tactical RPGs, where the player gathers an army of robots and pilots from the many robot anime series, to save the world.

The game’s story is told in a traditional Japanese RPG style, where players read conversations off the screen with a highlighted character portrait. Events are described in the battle scene by moving the robots around with animations and descriptive text. As the game has many different characters from hero factions and villain factions, some of which might not be from an anime series you are not familiar with, it can be difficult to follow. However, with so many anime series being featured, this game is still a great way to preview and discover new anime series.Like all Super Robot Wars games, the voice-acted battle animations for Super Robot Wars X never fail to impress. More so when you see robots smashing each other in the game’s super deformed art style.
