There’s no great story here, no exploration, and the game is very transparent about its treadmill-like design. But the battles are interesting, the training mini-games are good challenges of their own, and the humor is done well enough without being obnoxious with it. It kind of feels like the RPG equivalent to one of those Kairosoft sims. You’re going to win no matter what, but it’s charming and playable enough that the inevitability of it all isn’t a big problem. I would have liked to have seen more of the timing stuff manifest itself in the battles if I am honest. But you can’t have it all. To begin with you are woefully underpowered, so training, building your camp and living quarters, and interacting with the NPCS – the third portion of the package – is essential. Progression through the map will unlock new battles, quests, and upgrades from recognisable array of RPG staples. Swords & Souls: Neverseen: funny and fun During your quest there are a series of collectible books, and also fish to catch. You can inventory all of these collectibles in a village museum, much the same way as similar galleria encountered in the Paper Mario-verse. The game is shot through with a constant stream of humour, looks fantastic and is a breezy ten hours or so of thoroughly entertaining action. Training dojo aside, you won’t be seeing something that is reinventing the wheel, you will see a lot of RPG tropes, and you won’t find the plot as memorable as a Squaresoft classic. But you will certainly enjoy yourself and play with a broad smile across your face.

That loop could be described as having three components

Training in order to increase various stats and earn upgrades, semi-turn-based combat in the world, and accessing various merchants, mercenaries and quest-givers in the town. Every moment in Swords & Souls: Neverseen will be spent doing one of those things, but the good news is that there are interesting aspects to all of them. Instead of being class-based, players can train in various weapon proficiencies and spend coin upgrading preferred weapon types or magic. There is a wide and satisfying array of melee, ranged and magic weapons from which to choose and of course, different enemy types will be weak to different weapons. Combat itself is in 2D and turn-based but without the ability to pause to queue up the next attack type, so the action is fast-moving and reactive more than thoughtful and deliberate.  Battles are generally short, too, with a limited number of enemies in any one encounter. That’s not to suggest that combat is easy. Especially early on the fights can turn ugly pretty quick, which means a trip to the training camp is in order. This does mess with the balance, as it’s pretty easy to spend so much time training that one can over-level for the next mission. Everything about Swords & Souls: Neverseen is true to the aesthetic of simplicity, so the art style is bold, colorful and cartoony, not lacking in character but not incredibly imaginative, either.
