The Epyx Games – Sports Collection Switch NSP Free Download Romslab Being emulated C64 games, each event relies on eight directions and a single button – you may think this easy but believe me when I say that you’ll be rifling through the instructions for each event, after all, these are micro-computer ports and take no prisoners! Alright, now that we’ve set what to expect from The Epyx Collection: Handheld, let’s talk about the kinds of games the Lynx was famous for. Even though it was released pretty much alongside the Game Boy, it was vastly superior to it in terms of hardware: it was more powerful, it had a backlit screen, it could display color. It had more buttons, and it had more sound channels. As a result, it was vastly bulkier (you couldn’t carry it anywhere other than a suitcase) and expensive. The audio and visuals are spot-on and very nostalgic, but the real heart of the matter here is whether you have any love for these games from the days of old. Of all the retro-leaning titles I’ve covered, and all the vintage system collections, EPYX Sports Collection is possibly one of the most niche, as these are all very dated, and the mileage that you get out of them very much relies on your personal history with them.
Take home the gold in everything from skiing to skateboarding, from wrestling to roller skating, from BMX to bobsled, and many more.
The collection presents a diverse range of sporting activities, from track and field events like the 100-metre sprint and javelin throw to more specialised disciplines like skateboarding, BMX and hackysack. Each game boasts its own unique control scheme, often relying on precise timing, rhythmic button presses, and careful joystick (or in this case, Joy-Con) manipulation. While this approach is charmingly retro, evoking the feel of classic arcade cabinets, it also exposes some of the collection’s most glaring weaknesses when considering a home console port in 2024. Some titles suffer from clunky and unresponsive controls by modern standards, leading to frustration rather than enjoyment. This is especially noticeable in events requiring precise movements, such as the gymnastics routines in Summer Games or the halfpipe in California Games. The lack of any updated control schemes, optional tutorials, or even clear in-game instructions further exacerbates this issue, leaving new players to decipher the often obscure mechanics through trial and error. The instruction manual from the original releases is available in-game but you need to pause, move to the right page from the start each time.
Over 50 different athletic and sporting events across eight of Epyx’s retro classics in this remastered collection, including the best-seller California Games.
Then remember it when you go back to your go. Or write them down elsewhere. Whilst good that it’s not just button-mashing to run fast, this does make it more complicated and requires some practice and learning until it’s no problem anymore. And by then, you may be done is to read the instruction manuals. These are old school games. While there is a practice mode in each, nothing is told in game. Each sport in the game has a different way of controlling, even though you’ll only use the directional buttons and one action button(A). Button mashing will win you nothing. Riders Republic PS5

Take the snatch weight lift in World Games. You press up to start the lift, then midway press down, then up to finish the lift. You’ll only know that by reading the instruction manual. And even if you do read the instruction manual, good luck. All the games in The Epyx Games – Sports Collection require precise movements and presses to be successful. Sometimes too much. I still don’t know how to beat Bull Riding. As far as collection features go it’s pretty barebones, and this is really disappointing because as mentioned above, Epyx actually deserves more credit for what it brought to games than it gets, even from this collection which.
Some even developed in coordination with former Olympic athletes for a truly authentic experience.
Out of context, does come across as derivative. You get fully rendered boxes that you can rotate to see the promo material on the back, which is nice. You also get the instruction manual, and the ability to save your game in progress and rewind when you screw up. There are also some basic filters to recapture the authentic look of the game. Sadly we do live in an era where titles like Atari 50 have demonstrated what it looks like when developers really care about a retro compilation project, and for a relatively niche company like Epyx, some kind of “virtual museum” experience to explain what the company even was would have not gone amiss.

I didn’t actually know this company was essentially the developer of the Lynx until I was researching to write the review, and I’m pretty tapped into my retro gaming knowledge. I never owned a Lynx and just assumed that Epyx was a weird mob that decided to hitch their wagon to that console rather than the Game Boy. While the lack of context is disappointing, ccurate to the original ROMs. There are multiple savefiles for each game, and a pretty good rewind function is also available. Everything you would expect from a collection by M2 or Digital Eclipse. RICO: London Switch NSP
