FuRyu done a nice job of tidying up this underappreciated 3DS dungeon crawler; it’s not a stellar example of this genre, but fans will definitely find much to adore here, even though we would still say this is the weaker of the two. A lot of players might be disappointed by Legend of Legacy’s lack of a narrative. You travel to the enigmatic island of Avalon, a freshly discovered continent that legend has it is home to a vast, ancient treasure, after selecting one of seven possible characters. Every one of the seven has a different reason for traveling to Avalon, and as you explore deeper into its many dungeons.

The lore bits are still a cool way to tell a story, kind of like how the Chozo lore is handled in the Metroid Prime series. The characters, on the other hand, are one-dimensional caricatures of different archetypes that you’ve seen in a lot of other role-playing games, and their interactions with one another and the larger Avalon tale feel accidental and superficial. Legend of Legacy has a dungeon crawling structure that is similar to that of the Etrian Odyssey series. There is only one town, and you must frequently return there for upgrades and supplies in between exploring a nearby dungeon of your choosing. Each time you go in, your party usually goes a little further. A significant portion of the story revolves around you mapping out each floor of every dungeon so you can sell the maps back in town for some huge payments. Each dungeon has its own theming and structure. It feels like there’s always something new for you to do, whether you’re going back into a dungeon with a well-tuned team that’s ready to take on its challenges or returning to town to pick up new gear with your winnings. Although combat follows a standard turn-based structure, it has a unique and dynamic party formation system that provides it a tactical advantage. Each of the three rows in which party members are arranged provides a unique temporary stat boost, such as increasing a character’s defense or action speed. Similar to the Paradigm switching in Final Fantasy XIII, you can program a few formations in the menu before a battle and then switch between them as needed. Everyone might be in attack mode for a while. Then, to block a powerful blow, move your tankiest character to the front. The only negative aspect is that each time they are knocked out, their maximum health decreases, and this can only be restored to full if you return to the village and stay at the inn.

This simplifies Legend of Legacy considerably, but it also allows the creators to introduce some challenging enemy encounters, resulting in a difficulty curve that seems incredibly uneven. As you advance down the dungeon, defeating any enemies that dare stand in your way, you’ll discover that the tables have turned and you’ll need to revive your party members several times during each battle. Therefore, it can be annoying to be making good progress just to suddenly run into a wall.
