Some objectives can only be completed away from prying eyes during the day, but Vincent mutters that it should be safe to explore the village in the dark, as the Nightwatcher won’t enter it. At least, that’s what he believes. The premise is enough to draw you in, but it’s all over pretty quickly without an awful lot of explanation, even if you find all of the QR codes dotted around the village. Third Eye and the work they were doing, guided by the visionary inventor Dumas. Originally capitalising on the sale of masks and helping to find a vaccine, it seems a more sinister agenda involving experiments and a lust for immortality eventually developed. It should be noted that partway through The World After you’ll be offered a crucial choice (the only choice, in fact, with the exception of another right at the end). Make the ‘wrong’ one and you’ll be on a trajectory to one of the game’s two bad endings, which is unfortunate as it’s not at all clear which option will take you down that road.
As he investigates an old castle, he finds a way to switch between night and day and start being chased by a dreadful monster, The Nightwatcher.
The third ending is the good one, and clearly the ‘true’ one, but you’ll need to replay the game from the beginning and choose the other alternative in order to see it. Given the short length of a single playthrough, it’s worth doing if you want to really understand what’s happening here. (Should you happen to get the best ending the first time around, there’s far less benefit in replaying to see the others.) You’ll unlock a bonus game if you play through to the intended outcome, which is a Japanese-style visual novel version of the core experience. Rogue Legacy Switch NSP

I’d already played through the story twice and didn’t really want to repeat it a third time. The World After is set in the near future. France is locked down because of a pandemic. A new virus has been ravaging the world and to stop the spread, everyone has been encouraged to stay indoors. The game stars a protagonist called Vincent who’s a writer. Shortly before the lockdown began, he’d fled Paris into the countryside in order to focus on his book. While staying in a quaint village, his sleep had been disturbed by a recurring nightmare. One morning he awakes to find an envelope pushed under his door that suggest there’s something odd going on
Will he be able to find answers? What lies beyond the Tannhäuser Gate? Who or what is The Nightwatcher? What is the meaning of the strange messages he keeps on finding?
The game is structured much like a traditional point and click adventure. Vincent can move from scene to scene and stands still until the player clicks on something. While he stands still in these scenes, the footage you see is looping video that’s smoothly cut together. You’ll see grass blowing in the wind and supporting characters going about their business in the background. Using the cursor, the player can direct the protagonist to interact with people, named items in view or move to a new scene. Certain items can be collected and stored in the inventory which resides in the black bar at the top of the screen. Rogue Heroes Ruins of Tasos Switch NSP

These items can be combined or used by dragging and dropping them where intended. It’ll be familiar to veterans of the genre despite being presented entirely in FMV. The World After is a game with very clear objectives. Unlike some point and click games that have a lattice of problems to solve, there’s only really one obstacle to overcome at any one time here. The envelope pushed under Vincent’s door showed the ruins of a castle. You’ve got to find out where that is. Once there, you’ll find a locked briefcase. Maybe your friend in the village has a tool that could help? Of course he does – but he needs to you to get something first.
The World After is a brand new sci-fi full-motion video adventure game experience, created during the 2020 French pandemic lockdown by movie designers and artists.
It’s a very old school yet straightforward and simple game that doesn’t really challenge the player and requires a very mild amount of trial and error to get through some sections. Thankfully, it’s always very clear what you’re supposed to be doing next. I was able to unlock three of what I believe are four endings the game has to offer. While multiple endings often add different layers to a game’s story and provide replay value, each playthrough seemed identical to me up until the final revelation it’s important that each one feels satisfying regardless of whether or not you choose to unlock the others.

Only the ‘good’ ending answered most of the questions the game posed. When I got the ‘bad’ on my first playthrough, I felt forced into a second one to find an ending that would answer my remaining questions. There’s no way to return to important decision moments either, so most endings require an entire extra playthrough. The pandemic-based storyline is very topical right now. COVID-19 has had a far-reaching impact on the games industry as a whole. But I worry about the game’s staying power. The setting is so tied to the pandemic lifestyle that it may not remain relevant a few years down the line. Roguebook Switch NSP
