One day in Gensokyo, mysterious “black water” with a foul stench begins appearing from various water sources. Although a minor nuisance at first, and treated with differing opinions by many, things quickly escalate out of control when it begins gushing from any and every place. Before long, a number of parties are searching for the cause, be it out of duty, self-interest or simple greed. The main gimmick of the game is that grazing bullets allows you to turn them into water. Gathering enough water gives you an extra unit of health, that can be used to use your own Spell Cards. Two trial versions were released on October 6, 2019 and October 18, 2020, respectively. The full release of the game was released physically on October 24, 2021 at the Autumn Reitaisai and on Steam five days later on October 29, 2021. On May 2nd, 2022, Phoenixx and Twilight Frontier announced that the game would be coming to Nintendo Switch in Japan, releasing on October 20, 2022. My recommendation comes with a few asterisks. Reimu is strangely enough the least enjoyable character to play as (whoever decided her standing normal attack should send you flying forward a million miles per hour and THEN decided to put her in ‘s level kicks puppies and children) so the first impression the game gives off can be rough. It’s Kanako, Murasa and where the game absolutely shines. They all have super varied and interesting playstyles, and each tend to have a much more intense fight with certain bosses than others, which helps them still feel fresh for the duration of a full story playthrough.  Story-wise the game’s mostly th10-12 fan wank, and 11 is my jam so consider me pleased.

There’s a bit from games both preceding and succeeding those but most of the locations and characters are drawn from those three games. Story is hard to make out with limited moon rune understanding but from the gist of it, the sixth character’s story mode turns it on its head in an extremely cool and surprising way. That being said, for the 17th game’s spinoff, I’m really let down by the lack of… well Touhou 17 in here. There’s no Yachie, Keiki, not even Saki (aka objectively the best one) but we get the chicken who for some reason has all the best smut. Not having Saki in the game is tantamount to a war crime. I’m disappointed the rest of the cast you fight isn’t playable, but what we got was fine, I just hope that if Yuugi and the rest get added at all it’s through an update and not a paid expansion because as is, while the game’s skeleton is very, very enjoyable and there’s a decent skill ceiling to the combat, there’s not much in the way of meat on the bones to justify cultivating that skill. What I’ve played of Hard mode is fun, harder attacks deal double damage and certain spell cards like last longer, but there’s not a noticable difference in the actual patterns. I still strongly recommend playing Hard mode as while Normal can be beaten through enough head bashing,

Enemies send massive waves of bullets at you. Grazing enables you to break down these bullets by attacking or running into them on purpose.

Hard does a good enough job at pushing you into all the systems, but unless there’s some hidden Lunatic difficulty that really spices things up, it’s still a bit lackluster difficulty and content wise. I know I’ve spent a lot of this complaining but I really cannot stress enough how satsifying the core gameplay is for the vast majority of the cast. Reimu just doesn’t hold up in terms of damage output and she controls like a bar of soap with a jet engine strapped to its back, but otherwise it’s an absolute blast. I’d love to see more added to the game but given how long this game has languished in development hell already, I won’t get my hopes too high. The game’s great as it is regardless, if a little barren.

I am honestly conflicted with this game. This entire game is has been a huge flimsy ride from the gameplay that was first shown to the delays and development problems. It’s something that makes me question “why” throughout playing it. Did I have fun? Well I like to think that I had fun but it was definitely in a less consistent way than other Touhou games before. The story is split up into 6 characters and the first 4 of them have gameplay styles that are incredibly janky, stiff and in many ways can interfere with playing the game on a first playthrough.
