Levels start off with you getting an overview of the “base” that you’re defending. Around these bases are building spots where you can place down defenses like machine guns, mortars, anti-air guns, etc. There’s a big variety in these defenses, each with varying sizes and uses on the battlefield. There are also often vehicles that the player can drive and use to destroy foes. Everything from planes to tanks. These are incredibly fun and massively effective; using them at the right time can change the course of a level. You build these and use armaments with cash you collect from successfully killing waves of enemies that come at your base.

The enemies come in all shapes and sizes, and will find that different defenses work well against different foes. This might be why Toy Soldiers HD decided to depict the absolute horrors of that war with the use of miniature dioramas. Because watching a person melt under the heat of a flame thrower is far less traumatizing when they’re made of metal. What I like playing with a controller is that we have shortcut buttons using the d-pad. I can control defensive position with the up button, sell them with the left button, upgrade them with the right button, and repair with down. I can recall more than a couple of times when pressing down saved a structure from immanent destruction.Before getting to the review, can I just say that I don’t understand when games are ported that were in HD when they initially released yet they call the remaster “HD” as if it wasn’t HD before? Anyhoo, Toy Soldiers was a wonderful tower defense game on Xbox 360 and it’s still a ton of fun nowadays. In fact, many indie games from 10 or so years ago are more enjoyable than most newly-released indies. Anyone else remember Shank, Critter Crunch, and Shatter? With that in mind, Toy Soldiers HD isn’t a huge step up from the original but if you haven’t played it back in the day or you’re a huge fan and want a (hopefully) livelier online multiplayer component then this is definitely something to add to your collection.
For the unfamiliar, Toy Soldiers has you erect defensive structures around the paths that your enemies trek down in order to hopefully thin out and defeat every foe that attempts to invade your base.

This will be familiar for anyone who has ever played a tower defense game before but what makes it stand out is the fact that you can manually control these structures which can actually make them more accurate and effective; depending on your aiming skills, of course. This hands-on formula is impressively enjoyable and rewarding. There are 18 main levels in the game and 6 extra missions. The first 15 cover events in the Great War up until the British and French forces are knocking on Germany’s door. And then the space toys attacked. The game does a great job in slowly introducing new enemy types and your own list of counters to combat them.

It’s usually a case of trial by error until you know what formations work and which ones don’t. This is especially true when it comes to boss encounters. You can be on the very edge of victory but a sudden third or fourth stage may suddenly happen, causing instant loss and ruining a good hour’s worth of defense. Enemies range from regular foot soldiers, to fast moving cavalry, all the way to heavy tanks. Individually, they don’t last long under focus fire, but their strength lies in their numbers. Sometimes the A.I. defenders can’t seem to hit the broad side of a barn because the terrain just doesn’t agree with them.
