As it happens, that’s one of the game’s highlights. I’m currenhave both in my life. Having said all of that, I don’t want to give the impression that an unremarkable port makes Unepic a lower quality game. It was great before, and it’s still great now. In many ways, it’s in the upper echelon of indies. It has a level of professional polish that can’t be overlooked. Otly obsessively playing Pixel Dungeon on Android, and recently loved Traps N Gemstones on tablet too. But there’s something very refreshing about getting to explore a sprawling dungeon without constantly feeling like I’m experiencing setbacks.

An uproarious time is in store (no exaggeration) with the script on offer here. The voice actors are used amply for a wide range of characters, and turn in superb performances delivering clever dialogue. What I said in my initial review is still true, so you might find yourself “waiting expectantly for the next batch of funny dialogue” – I want to stress this, as it’s handled so well. It’s a game of two halves really, where a surprisingly hardcore RPG fights for priority over a lighthearted plot, iffy voice-acting and corny jokes. Playing as Daniel, a geeky stoner who thinks the entire adventure is just some kind of hallucination after one too many beers on game night, you’re thrust into the dark depths of a labyrinthine castle, complete with devious traps, hordes of enemies and plenty of hidden secrets to discover. You’ll explore the winding pathways of the castle in large sections that are laid out across a handy map for keeping progress. There’s no clear objective at first, our dopey hero is hardly taking this seriously after all, but along the way you’ll find certain sections are locked off, handily guiding you towards where you should be headed first. This sense of exploration is a huge part of the game, driven by the darkness which shrouds each new room in mystery. Providing a comforting glow as well as a breadcrumb-trail of where you’ve been. It’s a really clever mechanic we didn’t expect, and really helps nail that sense of uncertainty as you poke your way around each dark corner. In Unepic the majority of your time will be spent exploring. By default you’re carrying around a Zippo lighter, which offers a little bit of light, but in every room there are torches/ braziers / long candle holders that, when lit, offer far better lighting than what your zippo can produce. Furthermore, the extra light will reveal a steady stream of secrets that have been hidden in the dark prior.

While the stage seems set for a typical role-playing adventure, Daniel will soon discover that everything is not what it seems.

Adds quite a bit to the game; it definitely offers an intrepid explorer the suspense of wondering what lies in wait there in the dark. Another modern touch is that there’s a neat manner of fast travel integrated into the adventure. You’ll find these gates here and there as you explore, and when you do make sure you open them. They lead to a hub of sorts that will allow you to walk through any other open door that is available to instantly travel to that part of the dungeon doesn’t hold your hand but it doesn’t throw you to your death either like some other “hard” games feel keen to do at times (See Demon’s/ Dark Souls).

The game manages to dish out the appropriate amount of information to tell you when it becomes relevant. Combat feels polished regardless of whether the character is involved in melee or ranged combat. There’s some good variety to it too, with not every weapon being designed for every creature. You won’t be able to blindly run into every room. That sounds great in theory, but Unepic’s enemies are incredibly unbalanced, and it’s much easier to survive as a magic user than as a warrior.
