Valis III Switch NSP Free Download Romslab Genesis fans are undoubtedly familiar with Renovation, a publisher that boarded the Sega train early on in the 16-bit wars. Renovation brought a good number of cult Japanese games to America, such as Earnest Evans and El Viento. Valis III, released here in 1991, was one of their better imports. A side-scroller loaded up with anime art and insane precision jumping, Valis III is worth a peek by Genesis collectors seeking a fun relic from an era where Japanese oddities were celebrated with iffy translations. Valis III checks in with Yuko, the guardian of the Dreamland and bearer of the Valis sword. Yuko is unaware that Glames, a ruler from the Dark World, has set his sights on both Dreamland and Earth. Cham, an escapee from the Dark World steals the Valis sword in hopes of defending her realm, but is quickly captured. After an opening level where you are only tasked with running to the right, Yuko recovers the Valis sword and vows to fight Glames with Cham. Valis III grants you control over three powerful warriors: Yuko, Cham, and Valna. (You must rescue Valna before you can control her, however.) The three characters can be switched in and out so you can use their strengths when appropriate. Yuko has that powerful Valis sword while Cham has a whip with far greater range. Only occasionally are you forced into using a specific character, such as when Valna is rescued.
My favorite game in my favorite series, Valis III.
The game, developed by Telenet Japan, is pretty unforgiving. Valis III is full of precision jumps that you will fail — and fail often — thanks to the environment at hand. (The ice cave shows no mercy. You could crack a molar from gnashing your teeth.) This is a reminder of a time when games were exceedingly hard on purspose. Since there isn’t that much real estate to cover in Valis III’s nine stages, the longevity is propped up with unrelenting difficulty. If you are a good twitch gamer, you can get through Valis III. But if you get frustrated easily with games that tax the thumbs instead of the mind, this is not your game. The action is not entirely different from other side-scrollers at the time, such as Castlevania or ActRaiser. Redout Switch NSP

Lots of running from left to right, pausing only to slash through bad guys assigned to very specific routes. You do have a power meter for your sword, though, which adds a smidge of strategy. Every slash drops the meter and it takes a moment to refill, depending on how many power-ups you’ve scored to extend the meter. So, do you make several short, minor slashes? Or do you try to swipe and back off to maximize each attack? In boss stages, this is they key to success. Figure out the boss monster’s attack patterns, ID the weak spot, and then dodge to refill your sword strikes. That’s classic 16-bit gaming, for better or worse.Valis III is a neat little artifact for Genesis collectors to seek out. The box art is great, for one thing. But the game inside is a frightening tough side-scroller that will truly tax your twitch skills.
Main character
I liked these kinds of challenges back in 1991, and there’s a piece of me that still respects them to this day. (Yet, I’m still not crazy about “bullet curtain” shooters…) Valis III looks great, has some nice music, and will give you plenty of challenge for your cash. The Valis series is one that I hold very close to my heart. It may not be the most well-known series ever and some will regard it as just Castlevania with anime girls instead of vampire hunting, but I love these games and Valis III is my favorite. It’s the best game you can find on the Turbo CD add-on (or Turbo Duo as it is sometimes called) and is the best game in the series. There is a Genesis version that is a faithful port, but it doesn’t quite capture how good this game really is. The Turbo CD version is the way to go. RED COLONY Switch NSP

Story- Valis is kind of a weird story, but a very good one too. The main character is Yuko, a teenage girl who lives on Earth. She’s secretly the superhero Valis and can use a magic sword to fight evil and travel between Earth and Vecanti. There’s usually some kind of creepy psychological undertones that go through Valis. Sometimes they’re a bit sexual, but that doesn’t get explored until Valis X. That’s another story, though. Through the first two games, Yuko saved Earth and Vecanti twice, fought an army of monsters, killed her brainwashed best friend, and was traumatized by a few particularly sadistic enemies. In the time between the first Valis and the third one, Yuko has matured both physically and emotionally. Her time as a superhero has made her a stronger person.
Scenes from a boss fight
In Valis III, Yuko is met by Valna and Cham (Vernal and Char in the US version). They need her to save Earth and Vecanti one last time. Yuko is eager to help and teams up with them on their quest. This is just the beginning, though, as the story takes a few interesting turns near the end. The villain in this one, Glames, isn’t particularly interesting. The meat of the story is actually Yuko’s passage into adulthood and the friendships she builds with Valna and Cham. It’s probably a good thing that this is the last Valis story with Yuko as the main character. The plot’s gotten a little convoluted at this point, so now was probably the best time to end it. It should be telling that Yuko is not playable in Valis IV. I’m not giving any spoilers, but there’s a very good reason why. Valis III’s ending isn’t the best out there, but it’s sweet and does a perfect job at wrapping up Yuko’s storyline. Red Colony 2 Switch NSP

Presentation- Valis III pushed the Turbo CD’s cutscene capabilities to their absolute limit. Sure, the cutscenes themselves look kind of like a cheap anime, but they’re noticeably better than a good portion of everything else on the Turbo CD. They’re full voiced too! The US version is an English dub and it is hilariously bad, but it’s bad in a cheesy and fun way. If you want to experience Valis like a b-movie, then this is your version! Still, Valis’ story is beautiful and the Japanese version has noticeably better voices. I usually go with the English version on everything, but here I actually make an exception. The cutscenes themselves are drawn pretty well with the Turbo CD’s limited palette of colors. There’s a fair bit of animation too.
