Phenomenal work across the board, selling emotional beats that lesser performances would’ve flattened. But beneath some of that polish, Varlet occasionally flails. Navigation outside of combat feels utilitarian at best. Animations in day-to-day gameplay are serviceable, not spectacular. If you can accept that, the combat itself will keep you hooked. Battles are turn-based with a modern edge sharp animation work, flashy ability effects, and a clear emphasis on strategy. It’s satisfying in motion, and just complex enough to make planning feel rewarding without bogging you down in spreadsheets.

Varlet is very forgiving in that aspect. But the story takes quite a bit to really get going. At least in a way where you can actually put a name to what the point of everything is. However getting the same repainted enemies with a slight different feature asset or color palette gets grating. Plus the environmental puzzles aren’t so much puzzling is tiring. Varlet frames self-discovery inside a school rumor mill that turns out to be real. Kousei Academy has a second world called a Glitch, and it bleeds into the campus through desire. Should let the team dig into messy teenage headspace. In practice, the narrative plays it safe. Each Episode introduces a student with a problem built around ego, jealousy, or spite. You walk through their issue, eventually trip into a Glitch, confront a desire-shaped boss, and then the story progresses. These Chapters move quickly and often wrap up the moment they become interesting. It’s convenient for progression, less helpful for emotional payoff. I kept waiting for an Episode to linger, to complicate a first impression, or to let a consequence ripple into the next week.

What kept me engaged was not the mystery, it was the cast’s energy. The party forms around the protagonist rather than already being best friends. They tease, they undercut, they crack jokes that probably go too far for a school club, and it worked for me. You play as an unnamed (and highly androgynous) protagonist who has just transferred to a new high school after an incident involving his parents. This school is known for a few odd things. The first one is the fact that, if you’re talented enough of an artist, you don’t partake in normal classes, instead enrolling in what is literally a training ground to become a J-Pop idol.
