Volgarr the Viking Switch NSP Free Download Shu is a strange one. I reviewed it on PS4 a little over a year ago and although I enjoyed its particular brand of fast-paced platforming at the time, I was quickly reminded of its flaws when I began playing it again on Switch. But first, it’s still an absolutely gorgeously presented game. Its visuals mix 2D sprites and 3D backgrounds with wonderful results, running smooth as silk both docked and in handheld on Switch. Oh yes, you will die a lot in Shu. As you’re trying to save the avian people from the bubbling mass of grinning darkness that chases you periodically throughout levels, you’ll often be given too little time to react to forced direction changes and death will come swiftly. Once you factor in the other characters that allow you to manipulate the environment, each with their own button presses that you’ll need to remember, things get a bit confusing and finicky when you really need them to be simplified.

This brutally difficult platformer will both frustrate and delight.

If you’re willing to endure the game’s harsh challenge, you’ll find a well-crafted platformer that fills a tiny, but important niche on the Switch’s ever-expanding library. Volgarr the Viking draws inspiration from a number of arcade classics, but the two that stand out most are Taito’s Rastan and Capcom’s Ghosts ‘n Goblins. Like in Rastan, your main character can defeat foes with the swing of a sword or via a downward stab. Volgarr also carries multiple spears, which are great for taking care of long-distance enemies.

You begin the game armed with your sword

A spear and a frankly rubbish shield that breaks after a mere two blocks. Luckily the first weapon upgrade grants you a superior metal guard as well as the ability to charge up spear shots; charged spear shots do more damage and take out multiple enemies at once. You can also acquire a helmet, allowing an extra hit, and a flaming sword to more efficiently deal with the hostiles encountered on your adventure. The tools are certainly handy but what will actually get you through are the failures, those regular deaths and the mistakes learnt from them. This could be frustrating, but where the game excels is that it is always clear why you failed. Enemies move in set ways, jumps are a matter of timing. When you die you know it’s because you didn’t block that guard’s attack quick enough, you now realise that roll won’t take you past that spider and of course if you’d waited a little longer that jump would have taken you past the fire pit.

The controls are also a big help

They are responsive and straightforward, again ensuring deaths are due to your own errors. There’s a button to attack and one to jump; press up and attack to throw a spear, down and jump to roll. One potential problem is that in the heat of the moment you may find yourself rolling or throwing a spear when you didn’t intend to. If you are prone to unintentional direction presses, however, fear not – developer Crazy Viking Studios has you covered. This doesn’t remove those moves from your arsenal, either, as they are also mapped to their own buttons. Whilst the game never feels unfair with its challenge, you will have to set aside a bit of time when playing. In another throwback to gaming of ye olde times, there are very few checkpoints. Actually, with the exception of the final one, each world is split into two stages and the start of the second stage is your only checkpoint.
