The rules of the game are fairly straightforward: numbers at the end of each line of cubes indicate how many filled-in cubes there should be along that particular axis. A secondary number can indicate whether there’s a gap or two between any active cubes. By process of elimination, you work out which cubes should be culled and which must remain, playing their part in making up the final object. The gradual progression that arises from chipping away at this block is highly satisfying. There are nineteen of these scenes to reveal, each with ten objects, and they act as a nice sort of collectable memento to reward your work.

Although the scenes are pleasant, and there’s something quite mesmerising about representing complex objects with a handful of painted cubes, I would’ve liked a bit more depth to this aspect of the game. If the player could choose their own selection of objects to populate a given scene they could be more creative. The soothing ‘chilled classical’ soundtrack helps to set the scene, but it’s the warm nature of the game that really carries it through: it won’t make you feel rushed or confused or even really stuck until the much later puzzles. But that’s not to say it’s a walkover: those later puzzles really do get larger and, therefore, much trickier major ace in the hole: procedurally generated puzzles. Unfortunately, while this is available in the previously available Steam version, it is currently slated to be added to the Switch version as a free update, ideally by the end of March. It’s a bummer this missed launch because the way to counteract not having the overwhelming charm of Nintendo’s multidimensional nonograms is to theoretically offer unlimited puzzles. A world where virtually none of this type of game exists, this is a precious gem. This game succeeds well enough to capture the majesty of Picross 3D on Nintendo Switch. While I’d love to see more charm and smoother controls, I’m just thrilled to be playing one of my favorite kinds of puzzles again, and with the prospect of procedurally generated puzzles, I’ll hopefully always have more to go back to when I feel the urge to chill out to a good puzzle. For example, one set may consist of several different types of flowers, while other sets may consists of household items, vegetables, and other things. Once every item in a set is discovered, then they will show up in the diorama, leading to a cute incentive to complete each set fully. The controls are nice and easy; A to place, B to delete, X to mark blank, LT to move forwards a layer, RT to move backwards a layer, L to undo, R to redo, and left stick/D-pad to move. The navigation between the layers gets very confusing very quickly, and I often found myself flicking back and forth trying to find the level I wanted.

Numbers assigned in any direction leaving them as complete guesses, which as a Picross fan I found very annoying – I don’t like having to just guess at blocks, I like to logic it out properly. One other thing that was just annoying was that when you finish a level you’re backed right out of that diorama, so you have to navigate back down 1-2 levels and scroll right across the list again to do the next puzzle. Honestly, that just felt clunky and inconvenient – it’d be far better if, on finishing a puzzle, you stayed highlighted on that one to navigate from rather than being sent back to the upper menu.

It’s not a problem exactly, but it made doing multiple puzzles back-to-back a bit of a drag. They stay nice and simple, which is necessary for a game that makes you think as hard as Voxelgram does. The blocky, pastel aesthetic really works in this game’s favour and makes the dioramas cute to look at. The graphics during the puzzles themselves are as good as they could be too; the different levels of the view are marked by a grid along the bottom to help you track where you are, though I found it hard to keep in view when moving my perspective around and often ended up lost.
