War Mongrels is set during World War II. You play as Ewald and Manfred, two Nazi soldiers who decide to desert after losing their stomachs over the atrocities being committed by the Nazis. Whilst their whole plan was to run and never look back, they soon find themselves being roped into the side of the Resistance. The story has a lot of gravitas and reverence to it, and coming from a developer mostly known for making Hatred, the game is refreshing and somber at the best of times. Whilst understandably, the two leads are not German, they do, however, give it their all, and the back and forth between the characters, and not just the leads, are exceptional. Another positive is the presentation: A lot of the cutscenes are presented in a not-quite-cartoony art style that stylizes the narrative, presents the character’s views on their surroundings, and gets into their psyche. Whilst not definitely for everyone, it’s nicely crafted and well presented. But what about the gameplay, I hear you ask? Well, here, the news is somewhat mixed.

Each character has their own personality, background, and skills to use during the journey.

The actual gameplay is good, and planning is certainly required. A nice touch in War Mongrels is the variety in how you play. There is the choice of performing actions on the fly, of utilising a planning mode to stack orders up, or take to the field with a combat mode, where you take direct control of your guy, choosing who he shoots at. With this, things are kept pretty fresh, and it is the actual difficulty of the game that will do for you most times. If you have played any real time tactics games like Commando, Desperados or Partisans 1941, the gameplay of War Mongrels will feel very similar in that it’s stealthy. BLACK BIRD Switch NSP

Difficult, gritty, and you can very quickly find yourself overcome. Each character has a unique set of skills, but both can crouch or crawl to sneak around, both can whistle to attract attention, pick up bodies of soldiers, and sprint if needed. Ewald’s abilities include throwing bottles of alcohol to distract enemies or smash a bottle to be able to take out two enemy soldiers at once. He is also strong enough to punch them out when they are close. Manfred has a pocket watch that he can set the alarm and throw to distract enemies, and he has a knife to dispatch close soldiers quickly.

Enemy units have fields of vision, and they see anything in their line of sight at their level. If there are shrubs or boxes in their field of vision, Manfred and Ewald will be able to crawl past. Each field of vision also has a distance reference. Close to the soldier, you will be seen regardless of your position (unless you find a disguise). Halfway out of the field of vision is represented by diagonal lines. If either soldier is standing up in that area, they will be seen, but they can crawl within that area and not be detected. The sound design of explosions is intense but can also be used to mask loud noises you may need to make. You can move the mouse around the area to scout out your plan of attack, and you will need to break your strategy down into smaller goals because there are soldiers everywhere. Each enemy soldier also has a field of sound too where if you make too much noise close to the enemy, even if you’re behind a box or a fence, the enemy soldier will come to investigate. You can also go into tactical mode which pauses the game, give both characters an instruction, like taking out a guard each, and then execute the plan.

The interactive environment opens up many tactical options for you to explore.

This is where I had the most frustration with the game, even with the polished edition, where more often than not, one of the soldiers would just stand up and not actually do what I wanted them to do, or they would run across making noise and spooking the enemy. It was super frustrating, but I am thankful for the regular save points, so I didn’t lose too much progress. Yet, both sides committed awful crimes and each group of soldiers endured some horrific moments. Thankfully, War Mongrels highlights these moments in its dark but tastefully told story.

This scenario-based strategy title breaks down these key moments while demonstrating some atrocious acts. You control a pair of Wehrmacht soldiers who go from deserters to guerrilla fighters. En route, the pair enlist the help of other disillusioned fighters as they battle against an ever-expanding Nazi force. Set on the Eastern front, the band of soldiers must combat the elements as well as their cruel enemies. Moreover, they must use their skills, the shadows, and their wits to overcome each obstacle and complete each task. As such, War Mongrels has distinct Commandos/Desperados undertones.
