Whilst developing a feel for on-foot combat techniques that will, eventually, bleed into the skills you’ll need to pilot a Skell, the game’s absolutely awesome mechs. And immediately, the overhauled UI and menus make themselves felt, as choosing from abilities during early-game sorties is now a breeze that doesn’t require any permanent eyestrain on your part is largely unconnected from other entries in the series, with the game leaning into sci-fi rather than the usual fantasy JRPG tropes. There are even a few decent twists later in the game, which we won’t get into here. That said, a lot of XCX’s minute-to-minute storytelling is fairly dry, consisting mostly of characters standing around info-dumping and repeating tired jokes. This is particularly the case early on, where you’ll have to sit for minutes at a time while characters exhaustively outline how everything in Mira and New LA works. The chattiness recedes after a while, but the first few hours of the game can be a slog. To be fair, there is a lot to explain, as this is a dense game, stuffed with interlocking systems.

New LA is a sprawling metropolis, consisting of several districts packed with NPCs, playable characters, vendors, and quests. Expanding Mira’s map is a matter of installing data probes, which can be managed to passively produce and store various resources. Meanwhile, all your party members can be customized by assigning them different classes, skills, arts, and gear, and I’m only scratching the surface here! I haven’t even touched on the game’s pilotable mechs called “Skells,” since they only come into play later in the game. Platform 8 Switch NSP

It’s not an exaggeration to say newbies will probably have to play XCX for 20 hours or more to get a real handle on its many systems. When I got my boots on the ground and explored, the enemy variety of planet Mira was immediately impressive. Roaming packs of creatures of a variety of different strengths and levels spawn everywhere, and they make the alien planet feel crowded with things to fight. The large bestiary of different enemy sizes and species made me feel like I was constantly finding new foes to fight, even as far as 50 hours into the campaign.

It’s disappointing that creatures rarely interact with each other as kin or prey, though. Sometimes you’ll see packs of Fleet Evello, creatures that look like alien turkeys, migrate around a small sector together, or spot tiger-like Grex grazing in the sun, but they’re never trying to eat each other as you might expect. Mira is a hostile world for us players, but the lack of a simulated or even faked food chain often made it felt like I was exploring a large zoo at feeding time, and I’m the only food item on the menu. The city of New Los Angeles also suffers from this populated-but-lifeless feeling.

Passing cars clip through your party if you run through them, and few people acknowledge your presence. Refugee earthlings don’t really make an impression, it seems. The overall sense of place is weakened further by a bad soundtrack that tries to be upbeat, but just sounds like noise instead the introduction is as straightforward as always. Fleeing an alien threat, humans evacuated Earth on ships intended to help them find new homes in the galaxy. The White Whale crash lands on the planet Mira, and a BLADE member known as Elma finds the player’s pod a few months after everyone else started to get settled. Platform 4 Switch NSP
