That traversal isn’t just going from A to B, though — it’s platforming. Wall-jumping, dashes and even a useful jump that allows the hero to aim at hard-to-reach places. I love how the movement feels, and it’s challenging.
HIGH A soulslike platformer!
It’s rare that I play something that can catch me off guard these days. Even the most unique indies tend to be fairly straightforward in mechanics and premise. Maybe I’m jaded, but nothing has come out of left-field to truly wow me lately… until I booted up Blue Fire. What initially seemed like a standard third-person action-platformer ended up being something completely different — and even better, it was revealed to be an addicting, entertaining hybrid of several game types. Blue Fire sees players controlling an unnamed protagonist who awakes in the mysterious world of Penumbra, now overcome by a darkness. Armed with a sword and traversal abilities, players will jump, hack and slash their way into restoring the world’s light. Right off the bat, I was not expecting Blue Fire to take inspiration from the likes of Dark Souls. While its combat is more frenetic than FromSoft’s popular series, elements like bonfires, currencies that reset upon death and an interconnected world gated by progression make their way here, and it works. Traversing Penumbra accounts for most of the playtime, and I enjoyed unlocking its secrets.
Gameplay A dark world: Penumbra
From Robi Studios they have wanted to surprise all Nintendo Switch users with their latest work, called Blue Fire . We are facing a three-dimensional action and platform title that seems to drink a lot of icons such as Zelda, Hollow Knight and even Dark Souls. Do we check how this combination of influences feels and what is its end result? The intrigue and the gloomy atmosphere is the first key that we will have in the plot of Blue Fire. And it is that, with hardly any introduction, we put ourselves fully in the shoes of Umbra , an enigmatic warrior who must save the world of Penumbra and the inhabitants who live in it from the darkness that has taken over everything. I am not going to give more keys to a story that, in effect, follows the patterns of the classic hero’s journey , but that has its details and curiosities as we move forward and fulfill its main missions. On the other hand, we will also speak with NPCs who will entrust us with secondary missions and who will contribute something more to the context of the world through which we move. The fact is that, even knowing little about Umbra, he manages to win us over and make us feel part of this character . And that is something that helps a lot to continue fighting and discovering all the mysteries that surround us.
Review
It’s often interesting when a game wears its inspirations on its sleeve, especially so when they actually manage to capture some of the magic of the beloved titles from which it draws said influence. Spoiler alert: Blue Fire is a roaring success, weaving together elements from several other games in a way that still manages to forge its own identity. First and foremost, it’s a platform game. And we mean a platform game, with platforms. Extensive platforms. This is no toothless ramble; what we’re dealing with here is a defiantly old-school 3D action-adventure that’s not afraid to confound you, test your reflexes and drop you to your death if you miss a dash-jump onto a tiny platform suspended in a void. 9th Dawn III Switch NSP

That’s not to say it’s some grinding masocore meme game, just that it’s got some teeth. It’s quite refreshing, really. It’s a bit of an obscure pick, but Blue Fire reminded us mostly of a more polished Jersey Devil, a PlayStation platformer that had the difficulty sensibilities of a classic NES game. This is not to say it’s unfair, more than it has a surprisingly demanding feel compared to its contemporaries like A Hat in Time. Also thrown into the mix is exploration, which is gated from the most intense platforming in a fairly traditional but surprisingly rarely-seen way; as you journey through the game world you’ll encounter “Void” stages – essentially just short-ish platforming challenges that, by our reckoning, most recalled the F.L.U.D.D-less stages from Super Mario Sunshine in their abstract, floating-through-space style.
