The three DLC stories are shorter and less structured than Dagon, but still entertaining. One tells of a man lost in a moonlit garden, lured toward disaster. The second is a story Lovecraft wrote at the impressive age of seven.

Just uttering his name will garner interest from fans around the world, including myself. Coupled with full voice narration for each tale and it is just wonderful. Each tale is fully brought to life with such atmospheric beauty you can’t help but feel you are living the nightmare yourself. Each of the four tales available tell different stories of nightmares, with the exception of The Little Glass Bottle DLC which has a lighter tone. Each story feels different and varied from the rest. The main story of Dagon tells the story of a morphine addicted officer during his time in World War 1. It’s a gripping tale as the unnamed officer deals with figuring out what is reality and what is fiction as he delves further and further into the madness.

Uncover the unspeakable, long-drowned horrors on a distant eldritch island and wallow in Lovecraftian dread.

It’s a fantastic tale that had me hooked from start to finish, mainly due to the absolutely superb voice acting. Each tale is narrated so emotionally and wonderfully that it’s hard not to feel invested in these characters’ trials and tribulations. The other three tales depict some of Lovecraft’s early short stories that are equally as gripping. If you’re a fan of Lovecraft or fans of interactive novels, then you’ll feel right at home. It’s important to note though that this game, if you can call it that, is not long, at all. The titular Dagon (from 1917) is one such example. It’s loosely named after the Philistine god (sometimes associated with fish), most famous for having his houses of worship and statues repeatedly collapsed by the Almighty. The story keeps the murky fish angle to some extent but largely goes off in a unique direction, to its benefit. Drugs and sun exposure are a daunting duo for a man adrift at sea. I won’t spoil anything, but again it’s a short story. I wouldn’t call it a breezy read, but it’s too brief to be heavy-handed. The narrator adds an appropriate gravity to the proceedings.

It will only take about 30 minutes, but you may never look at the ocean the same way.

Added in the form of additional Lovecraft adaptations. All are just as brief (“suitable for one gaming session” as advertised) but add diversity to this collection. They also introduce diversity in narration, although you can also read along (with adjustable font). One DLC is an adaptation of a short story from when Lovecraft was only seven, fittingly narrated in a younger-sounding voice. Another is an excerpt from a letter an adult Lovecraft wrote to a friend describing a nightmare. Here, it attempts a grown-up New England accent with reasonable results.

So the messiness and garishness is probably giving its intended audience what it wants. Underneath the chaos are the spectacular cuboid landscapes of Minecraft, some spun into newer forms with fancier graphical effects, and sometimes these are striking, but entirely absent is the purity and strangeness of Minecraft. This is like all the world’s theme parks mashed together, and I pray that never gets quoted out of context to sound like a recommendation. you’re presented with a scene from the story, sometimes animated, sometimes a static image.
