That Goodbye World leans very deliberately into this device given its two game dev protagonists lends the proceedings an air of authenticity. Unfortunately, the brevity of the story, lackluster presentation, and frustrating and sparse gameplay make for a tough sell. Across a series of 13 brief vignettes, their story plays out, and at the beginning of each one, you have an opportunity to play a level from the game being developed for what seems an obvious Game Boy stand-in. The story itself can be touching at times, but there isn’t much substance to it, and parts of some of the chapters merely consist of dialogue boxes against a black screen. The game within a game, Blocks, is a 2D puzzle platformer that escalates in difficulty far too abruptly. You control a small dinosaur-like creature who can destroy and create blocks to get over obstacles and eliminate enemies. You can only conjure up as many blocks as you’ve already taken apart, and time stops whenever you activate the block dropping mechanic.

What’s unfortunate about the game is that some sections require a fair bit of precision, which is difficult when jumping is mapped to pressing up on the stick. What’s even worse is that even a simple mistake near the end of a stage can force you to restart from the beginning, like picking up a block you shouldn’t have or jumping off a ledge before you could fully see what lay ahead. Interestingly, while you have three lives to try and finish each level, you don’t actually need to do so to advance the story forward; a game over just takes you out of Blocks and back into the lives of Kanii and Kumade. It’s billed as a “narrative adventure game,” but there’s essentially no adventure aspects to speak of. There’s no exploration, no decision-making, and very few characters outside of the two protagonists. It’s much more of a one or two-hour visual novel with a puzzle-platformer mini-game tucked inside, but it doesn’t even have the dialogue choices or routes of other visual novels. I had to push myself to keep going as neither the gameplay or the story really held my attention. Not being able to control Kanii or Kumade or explore their world at all makes it very difficult to connect with the story of Goodbye World. While its message about the challenges of independent game development is increasingly poignant, the packaging around that theme fails to captivate.

The metagame Blocks, on its own, is equally plain, and the feeling I’m left with after rolling credits is largely one of disappointment. In spite of its interesting conceit, parting with Goodbye World isn’t really sweet sorrow. A psychological narrative game about an indie dev programmer and an indie game artist, making games together while trying to stay afloat, it’s a little dark, but I think it provides a very realistic perspective. I can imagine this game feeling a bit too personal to some people, as a fan of extremely niche gaming myself, I too have a faith in a lot of indie devs that never get that successful release (even after 10+ attempts in some cases). If anyhting that is a norm, for every mainstream indie game that finds the audience, 10 of them don’t, even if they are fun and made well. Ironically, this is probably not a good example of a niche and experimental game, actually, this game is made really well, and as far as the sinister story goes, it maintains a good sense of suspense from start to finish. It only took me about 70 minutes to finish the story, granted, I pretty much did not play any of the puzzle games, mostly because you kept hiding the key (at least I assume that you did), and I found it less stressful to just skip it. There was a little bit of confusion with the mechanics for me.

Maybe I just missed the tutorial, but it took me a few stages to realize that I can place a block under myself while in the air, so you don’t actually have to build any ladders. I thought the pixel art was very lovely, there are some subtle animations that I really enjoyed, and I think it has nice attention to detail, like that little effect on the ride when it stops. Overall, I thought the game was very immersive, despite having a relatively down-to-earth narrative, I think there is a nice psychological spin to it – I felt it was very relatable. Really like the meaning of the platformer keeps changing in each chapter…Also actually, players don’t have to play the platformer.

They can just immediately die three times and progress the story. But the fact that I still play it is like telling Kanii that her game is good! At least I feel as a player I am talking to the character by “choosing” to play the platformer. Feels really nice. Lovely game.A very simple and short game with an interesting story to tell. I can’t reveal much more about it without spoilers. The pixel art is cute and effective in eliciting the feel of a game dev interested in retro style. There’s some platforming in the form of a mini-game and while it only uses two buttons, the stages get progressively more difficult as the game goes on. Graphics are nice; I like the cool static effect and the iconic gameboy design and sound effects. But that’s where the positives end. Just Shapes & Beats Switch NSP
