It feels like it’s not only fulfilled the potential of its “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” survival premise, but exceeded nearly all of my expectations of it. Grounded is a survival game first and foremost, but draws a ton of inspiration from Obsidian’s history as a team of RPG wizards as well. You’ll split your time between scavenging the charming backyard setting for materials, crafting awesome items from the corpses of your enemies, building badass structures to protect yourself and your stuff, fighting giant bugs that gave my co-op partners nightmares, exploring extremely difficult dungeons, leveling up your character’s stats and equipment, and more.

The more you interfere with the creatures in the yard, the higher the chance that they come knocking at your own door, so you better prepare.

Numerous character progression mechanics, an enemy weaknesses and resistances system that had me poring over data in the menu, the elaborate boss fights, and NPCs and dialogue options that break up the action all make it feel more like a roleplaying game than most of its survival peers. Most of whom inevitably try to maim you. If there is one element that Grounded absolutely, positively nails, it is the environmental immersion. The world design is fantastic, with a bunch of little details all coming together to make the yard feel like a full ecosystem. Early in the morning there are dewdrops on the blades of grass. The occasional dandelion is mixed in with the grass. There are natural puddles and mounds of dirt, but the detritus of human life is also present: a random can here, a frisbee there, etc. An action figure version of one of the Battletoads can be found half-buried in one part of the yard.

Where Grounded does feel a bit rough is when you try to play it as an action-adventure instead of a survival game. While the story is solid, the main path is not the most direct. Much is left up to the player to discover, some of it by accident, rather than giving obvious pointers like most titles in the genre. If you’re not expecting it, this can lead to frustration or lots of wandering around. Battling the hordes of insects might also cut you down a bit as well at first. Ha ha, yeah, good luck with that without taking the time to hunt for the right elements in order to construct the armor and weapons needed. You start out by utilizing clovers, acorns and other vegetation until you’re finally wearing a samurai ensemble made out of the corpses of your enemies. They aren’t just for looks either, as several pieces provide unique buffs that could give you that edge in something like landing a perfect block during combat or allowing you to breather longer underwater. Tools for survival and combat aren’t all you can create, though.

Upgrade your armor and weapons to give your character the stats and advantages you need in order to take on the perils of the backyard.

Depending on the area you choose to make camp in, you may also need to craft a proper shelter as well. Sure, you can just easily plop down a quickly-constructed lean-to whenever you need to sleep (or create a respawn point), and maybe add a workbench and a roasting spit, but how do you protect it all from rogue spiders, mites and the like? Well, that’s where crafting walls, ceilings and more come in. The building controls are great and easy to worth with, even with console controls, and with enough time and effort, you can craft entire multi-level bases with turrets and ziplines, assuming you have the right upgrades.

Grounded’s tale of shrunken children in search of a way to return to their normal size isn’t always front and center; you might spend a dozen hours gathering supplies and improving your base without that goal ever coming up. But when it does take the spotlight, it shines by being utterly ridiculous and laugh-out-loud funny. One of your main allies is a fiercely annoying, spatula-handed robot who’s programmed to cook burgers; the bad guy’s name is Director Shmector; and you spend a lot of time running around collecting a currency called Raw Science – Grounded just never takes itself seriously, to hilarious effect.
