They still look they the old-timey Westerns they were meant to imitate. Told through a series of decidedly old fashioned cutscenes – there’s something charming about the ol’ timey, 4:3 aspect ratio, hand drawn cutscenes that are nearly thirty years old now – Outlaws actually does a better job than many of the comparable shooters in terms of actually shooting for a story and stringing it together in a cohesive way from one level to the next. Sure these cutscenes might be a bit jerky and rough around the edges, but there is a 90s animation style charm here all the same that has carried pretty well across the years.

If you love the hazy and grim textures of the original, you can turn off the modern filter. However, I wouldn’t, as the game looks amazing with its modern edge. Alongside this, it runs smoothly at 60+ FPS. Each character runs or walks like they’ve been riding a horse for hours. This was apt, amusing, and great to look at. Although the colour palette can make it tough to navigate the world, the handy map keeps you on track. The audio is simply divine. The soundtrack is incredible, and I adore the repetitive and cliched one-liners. Furthermore, the sound effects are loud and brilliantly rough.

What I really like about this remaster is that you can switch from the new graphics to the old smoothly, so it’s always fun to see how areas are improved over the original. This weird inconsistency was a source of great frustration since it could essentially softlock me in several areas, but it would somehow fix itself if I kept trying or came back later. I really can’t tell if this is an error on my part or the game’s, but it’s worth noting that this might happen to you. Another issue that isn’t related to bugs or anything like that is visibility. Outlaws can be very dark in some areas, and if you run out of lamp oil, you’d better pray you’re going the right way.
