But being that it is set in an anime universe, there almost has to be a strange lore surrounding why these panties can talk and fight. This game is an odd crossover of fighting game meets magical girl anime where high school student Yurika is declared the Warrior of Love by a pair of panties. She is then transformed into her own pair of panties to fight through each level. But Yurika’s panty-sona had all the frills of a high school superhero fighting for love. There is a visual-novel-esque way the game tells its story, which makes it dialogue-heavy and easy enough to follow. However, with the game leaning on women’s unmentionables, “Panty Party” takes some risque turns with dialogue that made me cringe on more than one occasion. In particular, a couple of characters reference the high school hero as “expired,” which I never quite understood what that meant, but the feeling it left me with was uncomfortable at best.

Gameplay

The game’s plot goes places. Let’s just get that out there from the start. Not only does it have truly eye opening lines like “you are able to transform into a panty. That proves that you are the warrior of love,” which are played for maximum laughs, but the game goes into some incredibly creepy places as well, such as one panty, with a bear print on it, saying “open your eyes! Like all high school girls she is past her expiration date! There are no scenes of the human characters wearing panties. However, as obviously satirical as it is, as a none-too-subtle send-up of the ridiculousness of fan service in games, the narrative and concept of Panty Party is so far over the top that it returns full circle and doesn’t actually come across as particularly amusing. Also some of the panties have male voices and that’s… well, that’s just disturbing when you think about it.

Panty Party is a surprisingly dull game. It’s an arena combat game where you play as Yurika, a girl who can transform into a flying pair of panties to fight other flying pairs of panties. She awakens to this power when she runs into Baka Pan, a sentient pair of panties who tells her that she is the Warrior of Love—the only one who can stop the villainous Panzi from brainwashing all humans into believing that panties are their one true love. With a setting this outrageously dumb, Panty Party could’ve at least been pretty fun by leaning into its ridiculous premise and going all-in on its stupidity. Unfortunately, this is not the case as the story is shockingly grounded; Yurika must fight her way through Panzi’s minions while recruiting other panty allies who can aid her in her quest. Cutscenes are long and bland, and the script is poorly translated from Japanese with inconsistent localization.

Yurika’s train journey to school

Yurika’s train journey to school is delayed, not by leaves on the line, but a panty (the undergarments are constantly referring to in the singular). Frustrated, the student bumps into the offending smalls in the middle of the street. Somewhat taken aback, the floating, talking panty known as Baka Pan is equally surprised to find a human that can see and understand her. The disbelieving Yurika promptly transforms into a pair of undies and must lead the fight against Panzi and a band of unloved panties intent on brainwashing all humans and forcing them to think panties are their only true love. As you can tell, it’s absolutely barmy. Encountering panties of all shapes and sizes, Yurika’s journey takes you through Japanese suburbs and beyond, eventually to Panzi’s secret base which is located well, following the ‘logic’ of the narrative, you can probably guess where it’s located.
