From the outset, the player can select two difficulty settings: Normal and Hard. The player controls a silent protagonist who is given a name during the opening. The player navigates the Vortex World through both a 2D world map, and to-scale 3D environments used in dungeons. While navigating the world map, the Protagonist’s party and other non-player characters (NPCs), interactive objects and landmarks are represented by symbols: these objects and NPCs include containers holding items, spirits that will heal the party, and a globe in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen showing the party’s approximate location on the world map. During dungeon navigation, the Protagonist navigates grid-based, multi-leveled areas. Different areas are accessed via doors, and as the Protagonist progresses the area is automatically mapped. While exploring dungeons, the in-game camera can be freely rotated, and a “Look” action allows the player to see environments in first-person. The game world can be navigated either on foot or by using a fast travel system unlocked at a certain point in the game.

I often see Nocturne accused of “having no story,” so I am both pleased and surprised to report this couldn’t be further from the truth. The plot leaves a lot to unpack, and things are rarely simple or straightforward. Early in the game, you witness the end of the world in an event known as the Conception. Tokyo folds in upon itself, becoming a hollow sphere known as the Vortex World, and you, a human high schooler, are turned into a half-demon, or Demi-Fiend. At the centre of this new world dwells the blazing orb and Shinto god of fire, Kagutsuchi, taking a role somewhere between the sun and the moon.

One minute you’re chilling in a hospital, the next, the “Conception” happens, and a ton of people die in the wake of a giant post-apocalyptic event. Oh, and you’re turned into Demi-fiend by Lucifer. Yeah, it’s metal as hell. All of this is augmented now with extra voicework in the remaster (both in English and Japanese), which adds to the gravity or absurdity of some scenes.

Nocturne ruled in 2003 and it rules now. The ominous and disheveled overworld overrun by demons is a bullet point on its own, but Nocturne is also so damn weird it sells itself. The game isn’t afraid to get dark, but more importantly, it’s not shy about getting freaky. Healing NPCs that berate you and tell you to “get out of their face,” demon party members that occasionally talk to you and give you gifts, and prospective party members that dole out odd requests to fulfill, then tell you to piss off: it’s the Nocturne way.
