Speedollama Switch NSP Free Download Romslab The story of the game is as old as time, where a wise old llama guru has enlisted the help of a group of llama mercenaries to save their whole species. You see, the alpacas have engaged in a quest for world domination, and in order for this to happen, they want to see the back of all llamas. Well, as far as the presentation goes, not a massive amount, it appears. Speedollama takes its inspiration from games of the late 80’s and early 90’s, and it apparently “features pixel art to capture a retro-arcade aesthetic”. Couldn’t have said it better myself! The levels that we have to run through are procedurally generated, so no two attempts at a level are the same, and this certainly adds to the longevity of the game. The enemies that seem to abound is very good indeed. The bosses we have to face are also well designed with a lot of personality, and all in all, the way the game looks is very nice indeed  is also pretty good, with a pounding soundtrack accompanying the sound of heavy weapon fire and plaintive squeaks from various nefarious alpacas and their mates. Each of the weapons we can use has its own distinct sound, and everything seems to be hunky dory in this area. So far so good! With Chris probably being my favorite just from his design alone, you spawn into the level and collect as many items as possible to unlock the end-gate, all the while blowing every enemy away with a decent selection of weapons, ranging from your basic machine gun to a laser rifle to a rocket launcher, though those and others are power-ups and last as long as you got ammo for them. While these are fun to use against the standard enemies, they are a necessity against the bosses and this leads to my first main issue with the game and that is the bosses are too bullet spongey.

The first boss, alone, took me multiple tries to kill due to both the bullet-sponginess of the boss and how easy it is to get damaged by them. That’s actually something about this game I find just a bit odd: The difficulty. While the levels themselves are surprisingly easy to play through, with dying only being an issue if the enemies do happen to get a lucky hit on you, the difficulty around the bosses is seemingly upped a bit. I’m not asking for the whole game to be easy or Contra levels of hard, I’m just asking for a bit of synergy between the levels building up to each boss encounter. It’s weird being able to breeze through levels without breaking a sweat, only to be blindsided by a boss before you had a chance to sneeze. Now, granted, the next boss was slightly easier, being a flying boss, but it still caught me off guard with the difficulty. Thankfully, you can alleviate some of these issues with the items you buy in the store either between levels or after you game over and these range from more health to a faster llama to more screen clearing grenades, the later being a huge help in some areas, though not against the bosses from what I was able to see.

Burrowing through the earth, collecting funky substances, and battling the relentless alpaca forces along with their beastly allies.

I do wish there was a proper health bar for the bosses, at times, it’s hard to determine if I’m close to destroying a boss. Yeah, you can see smoke coming out of the boss but, at times, I was less focused on that and more focused on just surviving. As you can imagine, then, the gameplay of Speedollama is rather frantic, with you running and gunning and jumping and climbing in order to collect the items you need to open the exit to the level, and then reach it in time. Run out of time and you lose a life, restarting you at the beginning of the level, albeit with your collected items intact.

The same goes if you sustain too much damage from enemy attacks. Run out of lives, and you’ll have to restart the level from scratch, and it will have also changed somewhat. All in all, it makes for a fairly entertaining endeavour, and as you play you gain coins that you can use between levels to purchase a variety of perks. But there are some negatives. With nearly each and every level having the same objective — collect things — repetition does soon set in. The levels themselves don’t help with that, either; procedural generation means that no two levels are ever exactly quite the same. Disco Elysium PS5
