After over five years, this hotly anticipated sequel has finally arrived, shadow-dropped two days before Christmas, and… well, it’s alright. Sports Story isn’t a bad game by any means, but it is a supremely disappointing one considering what it could have been. Sports Story follows your character from Golf Story going on a scenic trip with their coach and friends to an island that evidently has a lot of budget for sporting activities.

These few elements are enough to understand how Sidebar Games wanted to make the surreal humor of Earthbound its own , inserting it into a sports formula that looks to the light-hearted tone and simplicity of Mario Golf . The simple system of three hits is borrowed from the latter: first you decide the line of fire, then the power and finally the precision. Characters are positioned throughout to give small quests to aid you in your mission. Even though they have character and are distinct, conversations lack the humor and frivolity which made their previous release so endearing.

The missions themselves vary in their enjoyment. Some maintain the sports aspect while others center around searching for items. An issue that tends to arise regularly is the clarity of objectives. For example, in one mission you are asked to ‘kick a goal’, however, the most obvious area that replicates a football net is not the correct location. Due to this, I had to run around aimlessly within the time limit to find the right place. This simple task took a long time to complete due to the poor mission design. The plot barely makes sense, but then that’s kind of the point. The dry and silly writing that catapulted Golf Story to popularity is on full display here, and though some cutscenes can feel a little long in the tooth, we generally found ourselves enjoying the banter. Whether you’re helping a band of axe enthusiasts find a fabled woodchip somewhere on a golf course or getting shanghaied as a grown man into attending a children’s tennis boarding school, there’s always something interesting driving events forward. As we mentioned, Sports Story has gone far beyond golf to incorporate a whole host of other sports.

Though it feels like this is still a golf game first, the diversity of ideas on offer certainly helps to create a much more varied gameplay loop. BMX, for example, plays quite a bit like Nintendo’s classic Excitebike, while tennis trades the more measured and calculating pace of golf for something fast-paced and tactical. You’re sure to find something in the mix here that clicks with you well, and for the sports that don’t, you can rest assured that you won’t have to put up with them for too long before the focus changes to something else. Golf is still very much the focus of the game, and works like most arcade golfing experiences do. You’ll tap a button to start the meter filling up, hit it again to choose your power, and once more to see how straight it goes. Anyone who has played a golf game or two will have seen the system before, but it isn’t broke and doesn’t need fixing. Every new area is packed with plenty of tricky putting and chipping mini challenges to complete, as well as optional balloons to pop for extra cash and experience.
