Excellent swordsman, and currently someone who’s stuck on top of a mountain after getting his ass handed to him during the climactic battle at the end of part one. Alone, that is, except for a talking cat and an immobilized combat mech. So yeah, things have been better for Rean, especially since he’s been out cold for a month and civil war has broken out in the meantime. Since Trails of Cold Steel 2 is a direct continuation of the first game, it’s similar in many respects. There’s no great reworking of the gameplay systems, and returning players will feel right at home with the spells and character techniques.

The battles still work on an active time gauge principle where pinpointing threats and wrecking them before they can unleash hell is key, and it all flows together smoothly, and at a satisfying pace. Sometimes the framerate drops when there is a lot of mist in the area, other times it is when hologram-like effects are used for scenes, and at times it’s just when there are flames or other sparkly animations on screen. Outside of the additions that come with the PS4 port, Cold Steel II itself has several gameplay improvements over its predecessor that make the experience even more entertaining and pleasant. Fast travel is vastly improved, especially in the most tedious areas of the game, combat is more versatile thanks to new mechanics that allow more strategic use of your turns, and even the minigames present in the previous game have been expanded. As any good sequel should, Cold Steel II has an answer to almost every complaint you could have about its predecessor.

The new Overdrive mode allows linked characters to attack up to three turns in a row for new strategic battle options.

Plus, if you’ve played through the first game, you’ll feel right at home here. Not much has changed in Cold Steel II, from the presentation and structure to the battle system and gameplay loop. Heck, you even end up going back to locations from the original, adventuring through them all over again, but make no mistake — there’s still more than enough new stuff to keep you occupied, especially when it comes to the sweeping narrative before we get into that, it’s important to note that in order to talk about the story in Trails of Cold Steel II. We’re going to have to allude to some spoilers from the first game. If you’re fine with that, then feel free to read on. The story starts off slow, with protagonist Rean having to pull himself back together after the closing events of the last game. Separated from the rest of Class VII and with Erebonia now completely caught up in the chaos of civil war, it takes a good fifteen or so hours before the plot really starts to push forward. But, having played the first game, this methodical opening acts as a period of reflection, as the sequel slowly but surely gets Rean — and you, the player — up to speed.

Include ultrawide aspect ratio support, turbo mode, and an instant resume feature that allows players to launch directly from Steam to their most recent save.

There are certain improvements and changes though, such as an Overdrive mode where two partnered characters are granted the chance to go nuts for several turns with bonuses to their stats, removal of negative status effects, and the guaranteed ability to unbalance enemies, to name just some of the benefits. Overdrive can be a standout release when used well, and improves upon already-solid combat. There are also moments where Rean saddles up with the Divine Knight combat mech Valimar to take on enemies that are too large or powerful for the team to confront in standard battles.

The difference here is that Rean and his massive mechanical chum now target individual body parts for critical hits depending on their stance and actions. It isn’t a crazy shakeup to the core combat system, but it does add some variety into the mix, and hell, giant robots are always cool. As for issues with the game, they’re pretty minor in the grand scheme of things. The Trails games have always been verbose, with tons of dialogue to read and loads of characterization and setup throughout. It may be a little bit much for some players, especially given that the initial task Rean faces is basically tracking down his buddies and stuffing. Figment Switch NSP
