You probably don’t need a crystal ball to predict how this review is going to play out. Her only escape is to navigate her way to the Seventh Chamber in time for the rising of the phoenix along the passageways and chambers for the souls of the dead. Along the way she battles with fallen angels, jealous planets, tricky alchemists and manipulative lost souls. Overcoming the darkness in the chambers opens her heart to a lost soul, but the lost soul has been sentenced to spend eternity in the chambers.

Astro-illogical

To say that the plot of this game makes very little sense, is a gross understatement. Most of the time, I had no idea what I was supposed to be doing or why. You play the role of Elasaid, a young girl who falls into a coma during the games opening cutscene after being caught in an explosion during a London riot. The reason behind the riot, or Elasaid role within it, is never referenced again and plays no significant role in the story going forward. Elasaid is transported back into a past life as a highland warrior during the Jacobite rebellion. Just like the mysterious London riot storyline, this plot point is completely irrelevant. Her main goal is to progress through the chambers of Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Venus, Mercury, Moon and the Sun so that she may awaken from her coma and return to the land of the living. Along the way, you will encounter a small cast of astrological themed NPC’s, as well as a former love from a past life. Each will offer advice that is both meaningless and bizarre in equal measure.

Touch a shame

You’re going to want to use the touch screen all the time when interacting with puzzles.
The game is technically playable in both handheld and docked modes. In docked mode, the right control stick is used to move an on screen cursor. The right trigger is used to select or pick up objects in the play area. Right off the bat, this feels very cumbersome. I quickly came to the realization that this game is far far easier to interact with in handheld mode, which replaces this awkward mechanic with simple touch screen controls. The touch screen controls are not fantastic however on the Switch. Interacting with some objects, especially the next to useless quest log, is much more difficult than it ought to be. I gave the game a try on iOS and found the touch screen controls to be far more responsive on my iPhone. I do have a tempered glass screen protector on my Switch, so maybe some of the blame lies with that.

The main, dare I say only, gameplay element, is to progress from room to room by picking up and interacting with various astrological themed paraphernalia. There are therefore two objectives: to find/tap on objects hidden within the background scenes, and to figure out how these objects interact with the environment to aid progression. Many of these objects are hidden well. So well, in fact, that I often resorted to mindlessly tapping the screen in the vain hope that something useful will be activated or selected. This recharges slowly (dependent upon difficulty setting) so the player doesn’t overuse it, but to be honest, this just meant that I spent long periods of the game waiting for the hint meter to recharge so that I could immediately use it again. The gameplay is boring. There is no lateral thinking involved, just trial and error, resulting in eventual frustration and the use of a hint. Ring a bell and some mist clears, inserting a coin into a slot makes flowers appear on bushes. Putting a feather, ink, paper and water on a crow makes a letter. I could go on.
