Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Heart of the Forest Switch NSP Free Download There’s something unavoidably daunting about the idea of jumping into a fictional universe which has been developing, growing and shifting for almost 30 years. Take for example, Werewolf: The Apocalypse, a tabletop RPG and spinoff from the well-known Vampire: The Masquerade universe.
The game throws players into a world rife with environmental corruption, destructive cosmic forces and a species of werewolves (Garou) who fight an endless, losing battle for the conservation of nature. That’s a lot to take in, and it’s only scratching the surface of what the fictional universe has to offer. If players hope to waltz into the Werewolf: The Apocalypse fiction with the upcoming RPG Earthblood, they might find themselves overwhelmed, lost in a flurry of fictional terminology and concepts. An interactive visual novel which serves as a perfect introduction to the decades-old Werewolf: The Apocalypse mythos. Telling the story of student Maia as she seeks to discover her family history at the Białowieża Forest in Poland, the novel quickly sees her becoming embroiled in a battle to protect the forest and the spiritual forces that reside within it from money-hungry loggers. Oh, and her family history? Yeah, let’s just say there’s some canine in her DNA which she connects with as the story unfolds, courtesy of some environmental activists who may (or may not) be of the werewolf persuasion too.
Better as a Visual Novel
Heart of the Forest functions better as a visual novel than as an RPG. The game starts with an overwhelming amount of stats that are not obvious as to their use. Right away the player is presented with numbers for Rage, Willpower, Health, date, time of day, something that says Maia Homid, spiritual, brave, inspiring, analytical, cunning, etc. The game quickly explained how Rage, Health, and Willpower worked, and I quickly realized Maia Boroditch was the name of the protagonist, but the Homid and other stats remained a mystery I just had to accept/ ignore.
I realize that these are likely an attempt by the developer to make the visual novel closely linked to the RPG it’s based on, but I could have done without them. If I had one complaint about the structure of the narrative aspect, it would be that it functions more like a choose your own adventure book than a Japanese visual novel, as the player is often making choices and they are not always logic-based.Assassin’s Creed: The Rebel Collection Switch NSP

It would require a lot of guesswork to explore multiple paths on multiple playthroughs. I liked mechanics the way increased Rage can lead to different options, or how Willpower can be spent on responses that yield quicker answers, but many choices seem like they’re just there for the sake of creating choice. The visual presentation is very good. The pieces of art that act as the game’s backgrounds are gorgeous, and are an excellent blend of realism and abstraction. The muted colors serve the imagery of lush forest contrasted with decay very well. Music is more like ambient noise, which suits the game well, but certainly doesn’t serve to heighten mood the way a score could have.
THE WOLF IN THE SHEEPFOLD
The beginning of the story is quite slow. After 1h30 of play, we met activists who want to save the forest and we learned a lot about his family, but that’s it. It looks more like an episode of the summer soap opera than a RPG it accelerates in the second part of the game and the transformation of Maia into a werewolf, given the title that should not be a spoil From there nothing really changes. Of course, our story is now mixed with the fantastic, but it remains fairly conventional.
It is, on the other hand, pleasant to see that everything that has been put in place as we make our choices is bearing fruit in the last chapters. The only regret is that, ultimately, connoisseurs of the paper Role-playing Game Werewolf: The Apocalypse will find little point in browsing the Polish forests that Different Tales urges us to discover. Werewolf is not a title using the codes of the Dark Worlds, it is rather an introduction: the part both exhilarating and complicated during which you have to stuff yourself with the 200-page book explaining the rules of the game and the universe that we will have to master otherwise we will be watched with big eyes by the master of the game. At the end of Werewolf, we will have a playable character who corresponds to the choices we have made and that is what lies in the strength of the title of Different Tales. Here, no headache to distribute points in criteria which we do not understand anything. Just follow the story and our character is created automatically according to our choices. It is not for nothing that before finishing our game, we are strongly recommended to take note of our character sheet.
Gameplay
The gameplay (if it can be called that) consists of using the left Joy-Con to select one of a few options and using the A button to make your selection. You can also use the X and Y buttons to access your player profile and your journal. There are three critical character factors you need to watch: rage, willpower, and health. If you reach zero with rage, you become more timid with your interactions with the NPCs. Got no willpower? Well, that will limit how you respond to situations. Zero health gets a little weird. In one pass through, I hit zero health but didn’t die and stop the game, so death isn’t necessarily the end. One upside of the “chose your path” storytelling mode is you can play the game more than once to see how Maia develops differently with the choices she is offered. Astral Chain Switch NSP

On the downside, I played the first pass as a relatively middle-of-the-road character, and I finished the game in under three hours. As a traditional game, this is not really much to go with. As a visual novel, however, there are interesting points to enjoy. You get a relevant story line, some interesting characters, a splash of Polish culture, and some supernatural elements such as werewolves and forest spirits. The background sounds and music are a good match for the feel of the game. They lend good ambiance without being too intrusive. Atelier Lulua The Scion of Arland Switch NSP
